CT Trails Weekend Hike at Nepaug State Forest
This hike, led by CT Forest & Park Association volunteer Tom Burkholder and a New Hartford Land Trust volunteer, will be a moderate, six-mile loop through the woods and rocks on the blue-blazed Tunxis Trail, Tipping Rock Loop and Bike Trails, and on out to the Rome Spare Outlook with views of the Nepaug River Valley. Footing includes a combination of wooded, rocky trail and unpaved woods roads. While there are a few spots that are steep, the overall elevation gain is only 400 feet. There are two nice overlooks for taking photos. Plan on three to four hours depending on pace of group. This is NOT a beginner's hike. It is long and there are no places to bail out. There may be an opportunity to shave about two miles off the hike and return with an NHLT volunteer. We will take breaks and stop for photos and snacks. Bring at least a liter of water, snacks, insect repellent and a pack. If it's sunny, bring sunscreen and additional water. Wear appropriate clothing for the conditions and weather. Lightning cancels. Hiking boots are a must. Kids (10 and up) are welcome with an adult. No restrooms are available but within a few minutes' drive.
