Annual Maxwell Shepherd Memorial Invitational Exhibition
The Annual Maxwell Shepherd Memorial Arts Invitational Exhibition by Margaret Grimes and Ruth Miller is entitled, “Following the Motif.” Grimes focuses on the dense natural growth and play of light and in the woods surrounding her studios in Connecticut and Maine. A member of the National Academy of Design, her work is widely exhibited in museums and galleries.
Miller paints still lifes as well as the landscape outside her Connecticut home and studio. Miller’s paintings are in collections in the US and Europe including the National Academy of Design, The Corcoran Gallery and the Hood Museum. Also on display is a solo show of oil paintings by Donna Davis and a show entitled “Side by Side,” Barbara Scavotto-Earley and her daughter, Angela Earley-Alves. Scavotto-Earley creates clay and steel sculptures of people posturing in ways that represent human experiences. She received Artist Fellowship Grants from the Greater Hartford Arts Council and a National Medal of Honor from the National Association of Women Artists.
Earley-Alves sees her work as a response to mysteries, rhythms and characters present in urban environments. She received an MFA from Pratt Institute and has exhibited nationally and internationally.
The opening reception is Saturday, April 20 from 6:00-9:00 pm. At 5:00 pm that day there is a gallery talk by Margaret Grimes and Ruth Miller. The receptions including refreshments are free, and the public is warmly invited. A closing reception for Scavotto-Earley and Earley-Aves is on Sunday, May 19th from 1-5 pm with a gallery talk at 2 pm.
