Harvey Offenhartz "Small Works"
The Cornwall Library, 30 Pine Street, will host an artist reception for Harvey Offenhartz on Saturday, September 9 at 5 p.m. at the Library. The show of his oil pastel paintings, entitled “Small Works”, will be on exhibit September 6 through October 17.
Harvey Offenhartz, a West Cornwall resident, paints in oil pastel, a medium whose use is not only very time-consuming, but extremely difficult to master. It consists of ground color pigment mixed in an oil medium. Its fluidity makes him feel as if he’s “drawing in color”. In his words:
“My work is non-referential, i.e., abstract. I do not create images suggest them. The lack of a recognizable image is important to me … It is also why my works are untitled. In essence, what you see and feel is what matters.”
“Abstract works have a life of their own – they tell you what they want and need as they go along, and they are never finished with you. But you must impolitely walk away from time to time – and they never seem to pick up where they left off… At some unknown stopping place, I choose to call them finished.”
